2017 Sep Grand Circle 7 Canyonlands

Canyonlands National Park.
Not too many Photos even thought this was my favorite park. I guess I liked it because it is a plateau situated high above the Colorado and Green rivers. These two great rivers merge at the western edge of this park. This sights at that point are spectacular.









The following photos are interesting as they were taken on a road leading to an active Potash Mine. As you can see, the natives again carved petroglyphs in the canyon walls.
At the site of the current mine is a memorial to the mines that were lost in a disaster.

Montezuma's Castle. Tuzigoot ruins not too far from Jerome AZ Above and below are from Jerome AZ. This was and still is an artist colony. Very 'hippie' in it's day and, I feel, today! Beautiful with incredible views of the Verde Valley. Saw this painting above in a gift shop in Jerome, then spotted the same truck on the street. We were experiencing this day via a guided bus tour of the Verde Valley to include the town of Jerome and the more famous town of Sedona AZ. We also went all the way up and back the Oak Creek Canyon. The area surrounding the Verde Valley is known as 'Red Rock' country. You can see why. A Horned Toad safely hiding around the cactus. Evening sky from our campsite. 2017 Sep 15 Vicksburg

On our way home we stopped at the Vicksburg National Military Park. This is the site of one of the deciding battles of the American Civil War. It is beautiful, historic, but with a tragic past. No matter your political, religious beliefs, or ethnic back ground you need to understand that this was a tragic time in the history of this wonderful country. It is parks like this that remind us of the necessity of unity--both in this country and in the world where we live. This is history. The Union Army's gunship Cairo was torpedoed and sunk on December 12, 1862.  There was a lot of controversy where the ship went down.  It was found and excavated in 1960. 17,000 of the 20,000 that were killed in the Battle at Vicksburg are buried here in the National Cemetery in Vicksburg.  I think they said 3,000 stones are marked as "unknown."

2017 Sep Grand Circle 11 Monument Valley

Linda insisted on this shot at 'Balanced Rock' Why? Good looking cowboy I guess! Following photos are all in Monument Valley. At the end of the First World War, Harry Goulding and his wife 'Mike' moved to this area to live among the native Indians. They decided that a trading post needed to be established and they did this living in tents for the first year or so until they could build permanent dwellings. Harry and Mike realized the need for more economic development for the area and the local natives. So they approached the movie industry and succeeded in have numerous films produced in the area. Our guide showing us some of the many petroglyphs in the valley. He was a great source of information and we had a great tour. Beautiful and breathtaking is this place.
