2017 Sep 15 Vicksburg
On our way home we stopped at the Vicksburg National Military Park. This is the site of one of the deciding battles of the American Civil War.
It is beautiful, historic, but with a tragic past.
No matter your political, religious beliefs, or ethnic back ground you need to understand that this was a tragic time in the history of this wonderful country. It is parks like this that remind us of the necessity of unity--both in this country and in the world where we live.
This is history.

The Union Army's gunship Cairo was torpedoed and sunk on December 12, 1862. There was a lot of controversy where the ship went down. It was found and excavated in 1960.
17,000 of the 20,000 that were killed in the Battle at Vicksburg are buried here in the National Cemetery in Vicksburg. I think they said 3,000 stones are marked as "unknown."
