2017 Sep Grand Circle 9 Mesa Verde


I was fascinated when informed of the facts presented in the photo below. Montezuma Valley had a much greater population of Ancestral Puebloans than it does today!
We had a great bus tour of the Mesa Verde National Park that provide us opportunities to understand the history of the area as well as get some great views of the dwellings from various points.







The above photo is of  Cliff Palace from across the canyon. The photos below show our time at Cliff Palace as well as some photos of the ancient occupants. Our Ranger guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this place.
Please note that I was on this tour down into the dwellings and back up again!




Old Ranger tales have it that the people of this area just disappeared. Not so we were told! They just relocated to different areas. It is interesting and good fun to research on your own.
It was beautiful in a unique way and we enjoyed it immensely.

Montezuma's Castle. Tuzigoot ruins not too far from Jerome AZ Above and below are from Jerome AZ. This was and still is an artist colony. Very 'hippie' in it's day and, I feel, today! Beautiful with incredible views of the Verde Valley. Saw this painting above in a gift shop in Jerome, then spotted the same truck on the street. We were experiencing this day via a guided bus tour of the Verde Valley to include the town of Jerome and the more famous town of Sedona AZ. We also went all the way up and back the Oak Creek Canyon. 2017 Sep 15 Vicksburg

On our way home we stopped at the Vicksburg National Military Park. This is the site of one of the deciding battles of the American Civil War. It is beautiful, historic, but with a tragic past. No matter your political, religious beliefs, or ethnic back ground you need to understand that this was a tragic time in the history of this wonderful country. It is parks like this that remind us of the necessity of unity--both in this country and in the world where we live. This is history. The Union Army's gunship Cairo was torpedoed and sunk on December 12, 1862.  There was a lot of controversy where the ship went down.  It was found and excavated in 1960. 17,000 of the 20,000 that were killed in the Battle at Vicksburg are buried here in the National Cemetery in Vicksburg.  I think they said 3,000 stones are marked as "unknown."
